With an incredible night crafted by the Best Friends of BBBS and Kitchener/Waterloo’s most prestigious Chefs, came those amazing moments that really do warm your heart. One heartwarming story, in particular, stood out from the plethora of moments on April 9th.

After the mingling, champagne reception, & hors d’oeuvres were over and guests took their seats to begin the tasty dinner crafted by KW’s renowned Chefs, the Live Auction in support of BBBSWR programs began. The first item up for the night was a miniature motorized vehicle. A Volvo XC90 12V ride, generously donated by Kidsquad. Joshua (a Little enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Waterloo Region’s Mentoring program), who was volunteering throughout the night with his Big (Barry–a previous Mentor of the Month!), showcased the item and drove it across the stage and back while waving to the crowd of 340 attendees.

After a competitive auction and back and forth bids, the auctioneer yelled “SOLD!”. The car sold for $650 in support of BBBSWR programs and Joshua jumped out to help with other parts of the night.

Our auction winner got up, received his prize and certificate, and, to everyone’s surprise, the generous guest bought and donated the car to Joshua! After being told it was his, he couldn’t believe it, and was brought to tears! It was truly a special moment and describes the type of community we have here in the Region of Waterloo.

Importance of Mentorship & Volunteerism

It goes unsaid how important volunteerism and mentorship really is. This heartwarming story and its outcome demonstrate the type of impact any person can have on the lives of youth, every small act and every little bit can help to change a child’s life forever. You don’t need to change your own life to change somebody else’s.

If this heartwarming story has inspired you to give back to your community or make a difference yourself, there are always ways you can help and we are always looking for more volunteers or in-kind donations.
